Cuba
A Unique Destination
Many people often dream of a trip to the Caribbean, including a trip to the greatest of the Antilles: Cuba. The island's first foreign visitor was the Admiral Christopher Columbus in his quest for a quick route to the Far East. Captivated by the lush vegetation and the charming landscapes, as he first set foot on the island, Columbus was heard to exclaim: "This is the most beautiful land that any human has ever laid eyes on". Pirates, settlers and scientists followed in Columbus´ footsteps in search of adventure, knowledge and wealth. Sometime later, waves of merchants and immigrants from the farthest corners of the earth converged on the island: Spanish sugar owners, French planters, American businessmen, along with many personalities of literature and the arts who flew to Cuba in the 1930´s and 50´s to enjoy the delightful bars, casinos and night clubs.
The year 1959 saw revolution in Cuba and tourism on the island all but ceased. It was not until the early years of the 1990´s that the country truly opened-up to travelers longing for a relaxing sojourn under palm trees, the heat of the tropical sun and the refreshing temperature of the crystal-clear waters. Cuba also attracts those ready to discover a people rich in culture, traditions and proud to be counted among the happiest and most hospitable in the world. At present Cuba represents a unique destination in the Caribbean, contributed in part by its socialist status.
Resulting from the fall of the Soviet Union and socialist Eastern European countries, and compounded by strict embargoes established by the US, Cuba has been subjected to a long and deep economic crisis. In order to soften the devastating effects of this situation, the Cuban government developed the countries hospitality industry, allowing countless opportunities for visitors: beaches, colorful coral reefs, breath-taking landscapes, impressive cities full of colonial architecture and interesting museums, a nice climate and above all, the warmth, charisma and friendliness of its inhabitants. For travelers, their long-awaited Caribbean dream comes true in Cuba.
