Day Trips
Teotihuacan
The site of the third largest Pyramid in the world, the ancient ruins of Teotihuacan are a must visit site, when making the trip to Mexico City. On approach to the site, the two large pyramids of the Sun and the Moon penetrate the skyline. Climbing them, rewards you with views of the surrounding valley as you cool off in the strong breeze. Apart from the pyramids, you can spend the good part of the day exploring other ruins of buildings, palaces, plazas and altars, all accessible from the Avenue of the Dead. Guides are available at the site, or you can take a tour offered by all the travel agencies, and many of the hotels, in Mexico City.
Getting There:
To get to the pyramids, it will take about an hour by bus, or 45mins driving, or with a tour. The bus line Autobuses Teotihuacan offers a half hourly service to the entrance of the site from bus terminal Norte.
Taxco
Beautiful Colonial town, built of the slopes of a hill, which makes shopping for silver, and visiting the museums, and famous cathedral, a worthwhile work out. Silver was struck at the site where Taxco now lays, early in the foundation days of the Spanish ‘New World' colonies. Feeding Europe with tons of silver, wealth was spilled into Taxco to create beautiful buildings and the spectacular 240 year old Santa Prisca Cathedral. The Silver might be dried up in the city mines, but it is not hard to get your hands on some, due to the hundreds of jewelry stores that remain, continuing Taxco's title of ‘Silver Capital of Mexico'
Getting There:
Taxco is about 177 km (110 Miles) from Mexico City, taking about 2.5 hours by bus. Buses leave from the Terminal del Sur (Taxqueña) hourly from 7.00am and return hourly until 9pm. Bus companies that service Taxco are Estrella Blanca, Estrella de Oro and Futura.
