León Travel Information

Next to Granada and Managua, there are at least other three cities to be visited to really get to know the best of Nicaragua: León, Masaya and Rivas.
León holds the lead because of its historical significance, highly valued by foreign visitors. Although it was practically destroyed by an earthquake in the early 17th century, it continued to be the country's capital until 1851. The ruins of the former capital are still preserved, fused to the later architecture, characterized by tile-roofed colonial mansions with wide central patios. Rubén Darío, the great Nicaraguan poet, lived in this city and was buried in the local Cathedral, the largest in Central America.
