Visit to Guanajuato (John Mor)
As our bus crept through the hills, the landscaped began to open up to reveal an archway built into the mountain. This is the mouth of the first of Guanajuato?s tunnel systems. It is a little forbidding at first. The tunnel is just wide and high enough to accommodate the bus. No room for error here!
Guanajuato is absolutely spectacular. What was once a gold and silver mining town is now overrun with students. It has excellent dining opportunities and a thriving nightlife. Wandering through the tunnels comes highly recommended.
Built in and on a mountain, Guanajuato is riddled with tunnels which cut through the rock to connect the city. The artificial light playing off the stone walls of the tunnels gives off a frightening ambiance. Especially when you consider that just up the road is a mummy museum!
The Mummy Museum is definitely one of the highlights of any visit to Guanajuato. There is a mineral in the soil which preserves any earthly remains. If you are unlucky enough to come from a family who does not pay for the upkeep of your grave, you will be exhumed and if deemed worthy, stuck in a glorified fish tank to be gawked at by thousands of tourists like me.
Being on a mountain, Guanajuato offers spectacular views from it's peaks. The highest summit is accessible on foot or if tequila was your breakfast of choice, a cable car service is available. Guanajuato is definitely my favourite Mexican towns , CHECK IT OUT.
