San Cristóbal de las Casas Travel Information
San Cristóbal de las Casas carries the imprint of the American baroque style in the layout of its streets and overall architecture. This peculiar indigenous and European mixture makes it a tangible legacy of the Tzotzil and Tzeltal cultures. The Cathedral and the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, in baroque style but indigenous in their details, are some of the vivid examples of such a wonderful intertwining of styles.
Labelled as Chiapas´s Cultural Capital, this city offers a rich and diverse cultural spectrum. Some museums are highly recommended places to see, such as Na bolom. This is an old mansion with a collection of treasures from the Chiapaneca culture. Accommodation, restaurant and shops are also available.
Another option is the Altos de Chiapas Cultural Museum Center, nestled inside the ancient Santo Domingo Convent. It shows the life and history of the city reflected in a collection of everyday-life items.
Every year in October, San Cristóbal celebrates the 'Festival Cervantino'. This festival originated in Guanajuato, where university students paid homage to the literary works of Miguel de Cervantes and it gradually extended to several other manifestations. Today, the Festival Cervantino also takes place in San Cristóbal de la Casas and presents a wide range of events related to theater, dance and movies.
Chiapas and San Cristóbal was the mecca of Mexican reggae in the 1990s. So, take your time and attend one of the many concerts around the city.
Huitepec Ecological Reserve stands out among the region´s natural attractions, an incredible place teeming with natural splendor and a great variety of local flora and fauna. Ideal for photography enthusiasts. In order to access the reserve, a permit is required from Pronatura, a non-profit society devoted to the preservation of biodiversity of Mexican flora and fauna.

Cathedral
Plaza Mayor of San Cristóbal de las Casas, north zone 8am - 7pm
Built in the 17th century, it displays a serious baroque-styled facade with some indigenous influence. The remarkable decorations in its interior complement the numerous sculptures, paintings and its two Salomonic alters contained within.
Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzmán (former Convent)

The city´s emblematic temple since 1547, its baroque facade include plaster-made designs of indigenous background. Next to the statue of Santo Domingo, there is a pair of two headed eagles.

This cultural center, located in the former convent of Santo Domingo is next to the temple. It also hosts the City´s History Museum that masterfully shows the legacy of the pre-Hispanic cultures. At San Jalobil workshop, also in these premises, is a full display of beautiful outfits adorned by artisans of the Tzeltal and Tzotzil civilizations.

A 19th-century old mansion turned into a museum by the Danish archaeologist Frans Blom and the the Swiss photographer Gertrude Duby Blom in 1951. It has a grand collection of items from the Chiapaneca, Mayan and Lancandonan cultures. The venue also features a small hotel, a nice restaurant and shops. Money collected here is devoted to help development in local communities.
San Juan ChamulaIt is a tiny village located around 10 km from the city. It makes for an interesting tour to get to know more about the Tzotzil civilization. A guided tour of the beautiful church of San Juan Bautista is a must to get a better grasp of the local traditions. Its inhabitants still wear the traditional colorful outfits their forebears did.
